The Great Gatsby: Chapter 1

People like it when I say hi to them

People like it when I say hello

There are many times each day when hi can be good to say

People like it when I say hi

I can say hi to my mom when I wake up in the morning

I can say hi to the bus driver on the way to school

I can even say hello when I see someone in the hallway

And when I meet someone new, saying hi is good to do.

I say HI You say HI

I say HOW ARE YOU; You say FINE THANKS

HOW ARE YOU? GREAT

Good job real fine

Let’s try it one more time

I SAY.....
Now try this after us

A friendlier voice is an added plus

I SAY.....”remember to fill in the blanks”

I can say hi to my neighbor when he comes over

I can say hi to my teacher when I get to school

I can say hi to some friends when I see them in the lunchroom

And when I meet someone new,

saying hi is good to do

And now that we have practiced hi,

I think it’s time to say goodbye,

Goodbye, Goodbye See you later, Okay bye

The song that I chose to represent chapter one was "People Like It When I Say HI" by Cathy Bollinger. I chose to do this song for one major reason. That reason is because in The Great Gatsby, chapter one is all about meeting new people. We are introduced to the main characters in the book. Those characters are Nick, Gatsby, Tom, Daisey, Jordan Baker, and Myrtle. There is a constancy of talking between all of them because they are within the same group of friends. Therefore, this song can be used to, in a way, express the relationship they have.

Quotes:

1. "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." - Nick's dad, page 1

2. "Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." - Nick, page 6

3. "For a moment the last sunshine fell with romantic affection upon her glowing face; her voice compelled me forward breathlessly as i listened- then the glow faded, each light deserting her with lingering regret like children leaving a pleasant street at dusk." - Nick, page 18

4. "When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness." - Nick, page 26
