The Great Gatsby: Chapter 5

I don't mind

You’re someone who ain't mine

But someone that I'll get

And you don't know how

Hard I've tried

To convince myself that I

Can easily forget

But you left this feeling

Here inside me

One that never fails to find me...

On a rainy Monday

A feeling inside me

Like the days of summer

On a rainy Monday

I feel it inside me

In the hopes of one day

I won't lie

I still can't say that I

Admit we went too far

And you won't see me change my mind

But I really wish that I

Could forget the way you are

But you left this feeling here inside me

The battle in my mind still fights me

I can see that you're not beside me

But I still feel you shine inside of me

The song I chose to represent chapter five of The Great Gatsby was "Rainy Monday" by The Shiny Toy Guns. I chose this song for a few reasons. The first is because on the day of the meeting between Daisy and Gatsby, the weather is terrible. It pours and pours while he waits for the moment to finally arrive. The weather in this novel reflects how Gatsby is feeling and it tends to rain a lot, especially when the topic of Daisy comes up. Another reason I chose this song is because Gatsby is purest when he is around Daisy. Rain is a symbol of purity.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 7

Analysis: Death
The Death of Wilson and Gatsby and Myrtle occur in this Chapter. Tom is driving Gatsby's car and goes to get gas so Mr. Wilson can have money. Tom offered to sell the car to Wilson so he could make some money but Wilson said no he wanted the other car. Then Tom and Gatsby get in an altercation involving Daisy and who she loves. Tom gets mad and tells Gatsby and her to leave and on the way home Daisy does a hit and run on Myrtle. This got Tom and Mr. Wilson mad and sad. A witness told them what color car it was and then Mr. Wilson remembered that it was the same as Gatsby's. This led to Wilson killing Gatsby because he thought he killed her and was having an affair with his wife. Then after killing Gatsby, Wilson then killed himself. Nick is one of the only people that actually feel bad for Gatsby, and Tom and Daisy said that he deserved it.

Quotes:
"You know I love you". (123)
This is important because this is what Daisy says to Gatsby

Song:
Puff Daddy "I'll be missing you"
Seems like yesterday we used to rock the show
I laced the track, you locked the flow
So far from hanging on the block for dough
Notorious, they got to know that

Life ain't always what it seem to be
Words can't express what you mean to me
Even though you're gone, we still a team
Through your family, I'll fulfill your dream
In the future, can't wait to see
If you open up the gates for me
Reminisce some time, the night they took my friend
Try to black it out, but it plays again
When it's real, feelings hard to conceal
Can't imagine all the pain

Give anything to hear half your breath
I know you still living your life, after death

I feel

Every step I take, every move I make
Every single day, every time I pray
I'll be missing you
Thinking of the days, when you went away
What a life to take, what a bond to break
I'll be missing you

I miss you Big

It's kinda hard with you not around
Know you in heaven smiling down
Watching us while we pray for you
Until the day we meet again

In my heart is where
I'll keep you friend
Memories give me the strength I need to proceed
Strength I need to believe
My thoughts Big I just can't define
Wish I could turn back the hands of time
Us in the 6, shop for new clothes and kicks
You and me taking flicks
Making hits, stages they receive you on
I still can't believe you're gone
Give anything to hear half your breath
I know you still living you're life, after death

This song relates to the chapter because three people died. The three people that were murdered were Mrytle, Gatsby, and Mr. Wilson. When Myrtle was hit by Daisy she was killed instantly. Daisy had ran her over with Gatsby's car. Mr. Wilson was planning on moving out west with her and now shes dead. Tom and Wilson were upset, one because it was Toms mistress and also because it was Wilson's wife. Then Mr. WIlson went to get revenge on Gatsby because it was his car who had hit and killed Myrtle. Then Wilson killed Gatsby then killed himself. Gatsby was Nicks best friend and Nick missed him. This song is about one of his friends getting murdered and how he misses them.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 3

Summery:
In Chapter 3 of the Great Gatsby Nick gets invited to one of Gatsby’s parties. This is when Nick meets back up with Jordan, who he had met at daisy’s house, and they go around the party together. He and Jordan sit down at a table where they start to talk about Gatsby. They start saying these rumors that they had heard. For example one was that he was a German spy during the war, and another was that he had killed a man one time. Then Nick ask Jordan to see the host Gatsby. This is when they go around the party and try to find him. They go into the library where there is a guy who is looking at all the books, and had expected them to be fake. Then they went back and sat at a different table, this is when Gatsby tells Nick that he looks familiar. Gatsby then asked Nick if he was in the Third Division during the war. Nick not knowing who it was he was talking to said “This is an unusual party for me . I haven’t even seen the host”(52). Gatsby then replied suddenly saying I’m Gatsby. Gatsby gives Nick the nickname old sport. Then after the party there was an accident where a car has landed in Gatsby’s ditch. The wheel had came off the car.

Song:
Britney Spears "My Prerogative"

People can take everything away from you

But they can never take away your truth

But the question is..

Can you handle mine?

They say I'm crazy

I really don't care that's my prerogative

They say I'm nasty

But I don't give a damn getting boys is how I live

Some ask me questions

Why am I so real?

But they don't understand me

I really don't know the deal about my sister

Trying hard to make it right

Not long ago before I won this fight

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live? (tell me why)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative

That's my prerogative

It's my prerogative

Its the way that I wanna live

It's my prerogative

You can't tell me what to do

Don't get me wrong

I'm really not souped!

Ego trips is not my thing

Fuck all these strange relationships

It really gets me down

See nothing wrong spread myself around

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live? (tell me why)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative

That's my prerogative

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live? (tell me why)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative

That's my prerogative

Its the way that I wanna live

It's my prerogative

But you can't tell me what to do

Why can't I live my life?

Without all of the things that people say

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live? (tell me why)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative (They Say I'm crazy)

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live? (tell me why)(they say I'm nasty)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative

It's my prerogative

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 2

Summary:
In Chapter 2 the Valley of Ashes is introduced. This is when we meet Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. We also meet Mr. Watson and his wife Myrtle. Mr. Watson runs a shop that sells, buys, and repairs cars. While he does this his wife goes out with Tom. Myrtle is Toms mistress, and Mr. Watson is completely clueless about the whole situation. Also he doesn’t mind Tom coming around because he is selling Mr. Watson a car. Tom takes Nick to meet Myrtle which is a quandary for Nick because Toms wife is his cousin. We also find out that Tom and Myrtle have an apartment that they go to. When they are there Myrtle invites the McKee’s over. Mr. McKee likes to take pictures of his wife. This is what they do for a pastime. Catherine leaned in to Nick and said “Can’t stand them.” She and Nick talk about how they can stay married to the ones that they say they love. But then Myrtle comes out and says that she doesn’t ever like Mr. Watson, she just thought that he would be a gentleman. Myrtle and Tom started to talk about how they met on the subway. They met when she was on the subway going to her sisters house to spend the night. She couldn't keep her eyes off him and she just thought to herself “You can’t live forever, you can’t live forever.’ A short while later she started mentioning Daisy’s name, Toms wife, repeatedly and Tom broke her nose. While they were there Nick got drunk for the second time in his life.

Song:
Alanis Morissette
"You oughta know"

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you

I wish nothing but the best for you both

An older version of me

Is she perverted like me

Would she go down on you in a theatre

Does she speak eloquently

And would she have your baby

I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able

To make it enough for you to be open wide, no

And every time you speak her name

Does she know how you told me you'd hold me

Until you died, till you died

But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful

I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know

Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity

I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner

It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced

Are you thinking of me when you fuck her

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able

To make it enough for you to be open wide, no

And every time you speak her name

Does she know how you told me you'd hold me

Until you died, til you died

But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

You, you, you oughta know

Cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me

And I'm not gonna fade

As soon as you close your eyes and you know it

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back

I hope you feel it...well can you feel it

And I'm here to remind you

Of the mess you left when you went away

It's not fair to deny me

Of the cross I bear that you gave to me

You, you, you oughta know

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 4

I'm driving black on black
Just got my license back
I got this feeling in my veins this train is coming off the track
I'll ask polite if the devil needs a ride
Because the angel on my right isn't hanging out with me tonight
I'm driving past your house while you were sneaking out
I got the car door opened up so you can jump in on the run
Your mom don't know that you were missing
She'd be pissed if she could see the parts of you that I've been kissing
No, we're never going to quit
Isn't nothing wrong with it
Just acting like we're animals
No, no matter where we go
Because everybody knows
We're just a couple of animals
So come on baby, get in
Get in, just get in
Check out the trouble we're in
You're beside me on the seat
Got your hand between my knees
And you control how fast we go by just how hard you want to squeeze
It's hard to steer when you're breathing in my ear
But I got both hands on the wheel while you got both hands on my gears
By now, no doubt that we were heading south
I guess nobody ever taught her not to speak with a full mouth
Cause this was it, like flicking on a switch
It felt so good I almost drove into the ditch
So come on baby, get in
Get in, just get in
Look at the trouble we're in
We were parked out by the tracks
We're sitting in the back
And we just started getting busy
When she whispered "what was that?"
The wind, I think 'cause no one else knows where we are
And that was when she started screaming
"That's my dad outside the car!"
Oh please, the keys, they're not in the ignition
Must have wound up on the floor while we were switching our positions
I guess they knew that she was missing
As I tried to tell her dad it was her mouth that I was kissing
Screaming
So come on baby, get in
We're just a couple of animals
Get in, just get in
Isn't nothing wrong with it
Check out the trouble we're in
Get in, just get in

The song I chose to have represent chapter four was "Animals" by Nickleback. I chose to use this song because, in chapter four, we are introduced to more characters at Gatsby's party. However, none of these characters have real names. For example, there was Leeches, Black bucks, Ferrets, Bulls, and Duckweed. The reason they are not given "human" names is because they all lack human emotions. They are all like puppets made from the same person because they all act the same.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 1

People like it when I say hi to them

People like it when I say hello

There are many times each day when hi can be good to say

People like it when I say hi

I can say hi to my mom when I wake up in the morning

I can say hi to the bus driver on the way to school

I can even say hello when I see someone in the hallway

And when I meet someone new, saying hi is good to do.

I say HI You say HI

I say HOW ARE YOU; You say FINE THANKS

HOW ARE YOU? GREAT

Good job real fine

Let’s try it one more time

I SAY.....
Now try this after us

A friendlier voice is an added plus

I SAY.....”remember to fill in the blanks”

I can say hi to my neighbor when he comes over

I can say hi to my teacher when I get to school

I can say hi to some friends when I see them in the lunchroom

And when I meet someone new,

saying hi is good to do

And now that we have practiced hi,

I think it’s time to say goodbye,

Goodbye, Goodbye See you later, Okay bye

The song that I chose to represent chapter one was "People Like It When I Say HI" by Cathy Bollinger. I chose to do this song for one major reason. That reason is because in The Great Gatsby, chapter one is all about meeting new people. We are introduced to the main characters in the book. Those characters are Nick, Gatsby, Tom, Daisey, Jordan Baker, and Myrtle. There is a constancy of talking between all of them because they are within the same group of friends. Therefore, this song can be used to, in a way, express the relationship they have.

Quotes:

1. "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." - Nick's dad, page 1

2. "Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn." - Nick, page 6

3. "For a moment the last sunshine fell with romantic affection upon her glowing face; her voice compelled me forward breathlessly as i listened- then the glow faded, each light deserting her with lingering regret like children leaving a pleasant street at dusk." - Nick, page 18

4. "When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness." - Nick, page 26
